Actually, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 50% of all adults have difficulties with some type of headache problem, so this actually isn’t unexpected. One of the most common sorts of headaches which our patients are afflicted by is cervicogenic headache which, luckily for us, chiropractic can often help.

Cervicogenic Headaches Defined

A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from an issue in the cervical spine. It could be a result of an issue with either the spine itself (in particular, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it might be attributable to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine brings about constriction or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can bring about headache pain.

How can you tell if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Besides being given a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps

Since cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is generating them is remedied, it is critical to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that offers a considerable amount of relief.

In one study reported in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, specialists followed 80 people who had regular cervicogenic headaches. Half received chiropractic care and the other half underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the optimum effects.

Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments offered patients greater pain relief and lowered the number of headaches that occurred. Moreover, it also minimized the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
